Korean Freelance Contract and Settlement Guide for Foreigners 2026: Check quotation, tax and deposit
The number of foreigners seeking to do freelance work in Korea, such as design, translation, video, marketing, and development, is increasing. As freelancers are free, they must take care of their own contracts and settlements. In particular, for foreigners, it is safe to check your conditions with an official agency or tax expert before starting as residency status, tax treatment, deposit account, withholding, and tax invoice availability may vary depending on the situation.

Organize your work scope in numbers
Before signing a contract, you must write down the number of deliverables, file format, deadline, number of revisions, meeting method, and whether emergency revisions are possible. In Korea, there are cases where things are discussed quickly orally, but if you are a foreign freelancer, it is safer to leave the agreement via email or messenger. Especially when the scope of corrections is blurry, the workload can increase more than expected.
Please write inclusions and exclusions separately in your quotation.
Disputes can be reduced by listing the included and excluded items together rather than just the quoted amount. For example, write down 3,000 words of translation, 1 revision, delivery file PDF and original file, and additional meetings separately. The actual deposit amount may vary depending on whether there is VAT, withholding tax, or platform fee, so please check the amount standard.
Please check the contract and residency status separately.
Even if a freelance project seems possible, you should check whether your visa allows the activity. The contract is based on the project name, period, compensation, payment date, intellectual property rights, confidentiality, and termination conditions. Rather than signing difficult clauses right away, it is best to translate and check them, and if necessary, seek expert advice.
Agree on settlement schedule before starting
There are various methods such as advance payment, interim payment, balance payment, settlement at the end of the month, and payment within a few days after delivery. If you are dealing with a business for the first time, receiving a partial advance payment may be a reliable option. Also ask in advance about the name of the deposit account, whether the money will be sent overseas, and whether receipts or tax documents are needed.
Keep records of your data and conversations
It is a good idea to keep delivery files, revision requests, approval messages, and deposit records even after the project is over. When a dispute arises, you can talk about it based on records rather than emotional explanations. If you are unfamiliar with Korean, leave important agreements in both Korean and English to ensure mutual understanding.
