These days, canned cocktails are not just convenience store drinks, but can be the base of a home bar. However, if you drink it as is, you are only half enjoying it.

A tall glass and ice changes the taste. | Just add acidity and flavor. | It's better if you share 2 cups with one can.

RTD is better viewed as a fast base rather than a finished product.

The convenience of drinking straight from the can is an advantage, but in a home bar, a glass, ice, and a slice of lime make a big difference in the taste. In particular, sweet canned cocktails become much more sophisticated when made longer with large ice and carbonated water.

Why it's important

In the beverage landscape of 2026, RTDs are no longer just a cheap alternative. It provides a quick starting point for those who find bartending burdensome, and allows the taste to be consistent even when there are many customers.

Practical method

Fill a highball glass with ice and pour half of the canned cocktail into it. Add 5ml lime juice or lemon zest and, if necessary, reduce sweetness with 30ml carbonated water. Use the remaining half to fill the next glass with fresh ice.

Things to watch out for

Since the can already contains sugar and flavor, it is easy to get sick of adding syrup. Even if the alcohol content seems low, if you drink several cans quickly, you can get drunk faster than you think.

The key to RTD home bars is not more ingredients, but better finishes. Just changing the glass, ice, or acidity can change the atmosphere.
